I never cared much for the color purple, it just wasn’t my color. But now, you can find it on me almost daily since it is the color for the cancer that took the life of one of the most amazing people I have ever met, Kyle’s mom, Marie Martel. The words pancreatic cancer …. ugh. No body wants to hear that. No body ever wants to hear the word cancer, ever! It’s scary, I know it is. It’s an uncomfortable conversation and we just want to run. Please don’t, well yes..please run, just don’t run away. Keep reading — we need you.
Trying to turn a life changing negative into a positive — Kyle and I have taken on core volunteer roles with the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network to help raise awareness and funding towards the terrible disease [pancreatic cancer] that took his Mother at the young age of 59.
Marie Martel was born in Manchester, NH on April 14th 1953. She led a life filled with love and commitment to her family and friends. She touched the lives of so many with her loving selflessness that was admired by everyone who ever had the privilege of knowing her. On September 21st 2012, she was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer. A short 45 days later on November 5th 2012, she passed away.
Kyle and I, along with other members of the affiliate, were lucky enough to experience a tour of the lab of Scott Seeley, grant recipient and pancreatic cancer researcher at UCSF. Scott and his team are absolutely amazing. It was truly an amazing day learning more and hearing about their findings and hope for a cure.
On June 22, 2014 – San Francisco will hold their annual fundraising event, Purple Stride 5k at Crissy Field with Golden Gate Bridge as the backdrop. I am honored to be taking on the core role of event coordinator for this event. It’s a lot of work, but the least I can do in the fight for a cure and to raise awareness.
We can’t do it alone. This is our fundraising event for the year and I am reaching out to my readers asking for help! If you are local, please consider walking/running/volunteering for the event : purplestride.org/sanfrancisco (Check out this short video to see how great PurpleStride is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRfjLVbcud4 )
If you aren’t, please take a moment and check out our team page Inspired By Marie and consider making a donation. No donation is ever too small.
Please help us raise money so that amazing individuals like Dr. Scott Seeley, MD, PhD can continue to receive grants and work towards finding a cure. A breakthrough in one kind of cancer can help lead to a cure of them all. I don’t wish the pain we feel daily from our loss on anyone.
Thank you so much for your consideration!
